Hanuman Chalisa Chaupai - 26
Sankata te Hanuman Chudavai ,
Mana krama bachana dhyana jo lavai.
Hanuman frees him from all troubles who meditates upon him in thought, action and word.
It is a belief and time tested truth that Hanuman comes to the rescue of a person facing a crisis, if he contemplates on Hanuman with sincerity and faith , all through, in his thought, action and speech.
Sankatamochana is a well known epithet ascribed to Hanuman.
The most interesting aspect of Hanuman's adoration has been that he is invoked for the achievement of success in enterprises and removal of obstacles and diseases of various types. Texts on agriculture also recommend to invoke him for the purpose of destruction of insects which are injurious to crops. The astrological sciences invoke Hanuman for the remedial measures to be adopted to ward off ill effects of planets especially Saturn. He is also considered to be a master musician and could grace the devotee.
Sankatamochana - the dispeller of distress.
In the Ramayana story, there are several episodes when Rama was in distress and Hanuman was responsible for the removal of the apparent danger. The first such episode refers to his crossing the vast ocean in search of Sita, and the other when Lakshmana was struck with the shakti of Meghanada, the son of Ravana, and could be cured with the application of a medicinal herb which had to be brought from the Himalayas before sun rise. This feat was accomplished by Hanuman in due time.
Hanuman also removed the distress of Sugriva, Sita , Vibhishana and vanaras. Hanuman is a deity providing quick relief from the distress whether to Rama or to the common man.
The sankatamochana aspect of Hanuman became so popular with the masses that Tulasidasa, the greatest of Hindi poets , composed ' Sankata mochana stotra ' in praise of Hanuman, which is very popular. In this form, Hanuman is portrayed in swift movement carrying a mountain in one hand and a club in the other.
